History of Lahore: From Ancient to Modern

Early mentions of the city appear in the 10th-century text “Hudud al-Alam,” describing it as a small town with flourishing markets and temples.

A Flourishing Capital under Diverse Rulers

Lahore rose to prominence in the late 10th century and subsequently served as the capital for several empires. The Hindu Shahis, Ghaznavids, and the Delhi Sultanate all left their mark on the city’s development. In 1152, under Ghaznavid rule, Lahore became the eastern capital, eventually becoming the sole capital after the fall of Ghazni in 1163. The Ghaznavid era saw the city flourish, with its center likely located west of the present-day Shah Alami Bazaar. The Delhi Sultanate, a succession of Muslim dynasties, further shaped Lahore’s character. Notably, Sultan Qutb-ud-din Aybak’s coronation here in 1206 marked a pivotal moment, making him the first Muslim Sultan of South Asia.

The Golden Age: The Mughal Empire’s Legacy

Undoubtedly, Lahore’s most magnificent era unfolded under the Mughal Empire (1524-1752). Mughal emperors, particularly Babur, Akbar the Great, and Jahangir, transformed Lahore into a dazzling capital city. The city was captured by Nader Shah of Persia in 1739, and power struggles ensued between Afghans and Sikhs. Despite these challenges, Lahore retained its significance and eventually became the capital of the Sikh Empire in the early 19th century, experiencing a revival of sorts.

Colonial Rule and the Dawn of Independence

The British Raj annexed Lahore in 1849, making it the capital of British Punjab. The city remained a crucial center for political discourse, witnessing pivotal moments in the independence movements of both India and Pakistan. Lahore played host to the declaration of Indian Independence in 1947, as well as the Lahore Resolution of 1940, which called for the establishment of Pakistan.
